My graduate exhibition was earlier this week, and I’m still bowled over by the amazing response it received- the place was packed out, and so many people I’ve gotten to know over the past 4 years living in London unexpectedly turned up, which was a lovely surprise.

My Book Arts & Design course’s exhibition will showcase emerging talent within art, design, illustration, artists’ books, film, animation and much more, so there will be plenty to inspire you.

So I’m about to graduate from art college. I hope that ‘little me’ would be proud that I took that very first essay entitled ‘What I Want to be When I Grow Up’ (my answer: option 1. an Artist or 2. a Mermaid) seriously enough to to carry out her dream thus far.

It’s been tougher than I thought, and it’s only going to get scarier as my responsibilities and expectations continue to grow, but for now the patient, persistant and sometimes even relentless dedication to my labour of love feels like an achievement.

(And plus, I’ll always have ‘Mermaid’ to fall back on, right?!) x

Just randomly stumbled across this lovely award-winning photograph by Enda Cavanagh, and instantly recognized the back of my own father on one of his daily morning swims! :)

“I took this image at sunrise on a beautiful but chilly April morning. It was my first image of the day and it is my favorite. As I set up my tripod, an early morning swimmer and his dog walked in front of me and stood mesmerized by the early morning sun. At first I was annoyed but quickly realized that it was they who would complete the shot. The Forty Foot is located beside the Martello Tower, featured in James Joyce’s Ulysses”

Hello, just curious as to if my any chance you knownhownyou successfully got tagged for artists on tumblr. I've tried tagging multiple work that's been successfully ragged on others and its quite popular, but I just can't seem to snag artists on tumblr. :( sorry if this is a weird question?

Hi there! Honestly, I don’t know how I just got on artists on tumblr, but I suppose it appealed to one of the editors who may follow my blog. Unfortunately, once you’ve tagged your work, it’s kinda beyond your control what the editors like or feature (I know this, because I’m an editor myself for DIY and Crafts!)

For instance, I’ve posted bits and pieces of my artwork over the years (stuff which has reached 500+ notes) that has never been featured, yet this recent post is literally just a messy page from my old journal, from way back when I was a moody teenager, and it is probably my first piece to ever be featured on artists on tumblr… So it’s pretty random what the editors stumble across and what appeals, but alas, such is the subjective nature of art!

My advice to you is to continue tagging your stuff, and perhaps try submitting your work into art blogs that accept submissions? While being featured is flattering (and also a useful way of getting your art seen by a larger audience), please never take it personally when your work isn’t featured. There’s a multitude of reasons for this beyond even taste- editors devote their time for free, but there’s simply not enough time in the day to see everything tagged on tumblr!

Keep on making quality art, keep on tagging, and you’re bound to get noticed eventually. Even if you’re never featured (which should never be a priority anyhow), strangers will be moved (which is the priority!) and will consequently share you work x
